Wedding Flowers

NEWS 22/05/2023

Wedding flowers are an integral part of any wedding celebration. They add colour, beauty, and a touch of elegance to the occasion, making it even more special and memorable. From the bridal bouquet to the centrepieces, wedding flowers play a crucial role in creating the perfect ambience for your big day. Choosing the right flowers can set the tone for the entire event and can even reflect the personality of the couple. We collaborated with Joe, who is the Creative Lead at Elizabeth Marsh Floral Design on this post to find out more about their floral recommendations for weddings.  In this blog post, we will explore some tips for selecting the right wedding flowers to make your wedding day even more special.

Choose a colour scheme

The first step in choosing wedding flowers is to decide on a colour scheme. This will help you narrow down your options and ensure that your flowers complement the rest of your wedding décor. Consider the colours of your bridesmaids’ dresses, the venue, and any other decorations you plan to use. In addition, using a variety of shades of your chosen colours will add depth and interest to your arrangements.

Consider the season

It is important to choose flowers that are in season for your wedding. Not only will they be easier to find, but they will also be more affordable. Certain blooms are more readily available during certain times of the year, which can affect their cost and availability. According to Joe, summer weddings “call for bold and vibrant blooms that capture the essence of the season” while winter weddings “offer a chance to create a romantic and elegant atmosphere with the use of seasonal flowers”. Joe also recommends the addition of elements such as dried wheat, berries, or autumn leaves in the floral arrangements.

Work with a florist

Working with a professional florist can help take some of the stress out of choosing wedding flowers. They can guide you through the process, help you choose flowers that will work well in your wedding venue and create stunning arrangements that will enhance the overall ambience of your special day. Professional florists have years of experience and knowledge when it comes to floral design, so it is important to trust their expertise.

Choose flowers with symbolic meaning

Many flowers have symbolic meanings that can add depth and significance to your wedding day. Whether you want to add a personal touch to your wedding ceremony or simply love the idea of incorporating flowers with special significance.

Here are some types of flowers used for weddings and what they symbolise:

Roses: Roses are a classic choice for weddings and come in a variety of colours, each with its own meaning. Red roses symbolise love and passion, while pink roses represent romance and grace. White roses signify purity and innocence, and yellow roses represent friendship and joy. Roses are great for winter according to Joe, as they “provide a touch of sophistication with their classic beauty and rich colours”.

Peonies: Peonies are a popular choice for wedding bouquets and centrepieces. Peonies come in a wide range of colours, including white, pink, red, and even yellow. This makes them a versatile choice for any wedding colour scheme. Peonies are said to represent good fortune, prosperity, and a happy marriage. Joe adds that these flowers showcase the beauty of the spring season.

Hydrangeas: Hydrangeas are another popular wedding flower, known for their large clusters of blooms. They come in a range of colours, including blue, white, pink, and purple. Hydrangeas are said to symbolise gratitude, understanding, and heartfelt emotions. Hydrangeas are in season during the summer months, which is a popular time for weddings. According to Joe, they are perfect for spring due to their soft pastel hues.

Gypsophila: Gypsophila is a delicate and affordable option for wedding flowers. Often used as filler flowers in bouquets and arrangements, these small and dainty blooms represent purity, innocence, and everlasting love, making them a popular choice for wedding decor.
