Memorials and celebrations of life

The Inner Temple provides a private and welcoming setting for memorials and celebrations of life in the City of London. It is a place where families, friends and colleagues can come together to remember, reflect and spend time with one another.

A familiar and supportive setting

For some, The Inner Temple is already a familiar place, particularly for members of the Inn and those connected to the legal profession. At the same time, the venue welcomes families and organisations from all backgrounds looking for a setting that offers privacy, space and thoughtful support.

Some memorials begin with a service at Temple Church before continuing to one of the reception rooms for the gathering afterwards.

Whether you are arranging a small family gathering or a larger memorial, our team will support the practical arrangements with care, helping to keep the process clear and manageable.

Shaped around each memorial gathering

Each memorial or celebration of life is shaped around the wishes of those organising it and the person being remembered.

Some gatherings follow a more traditional structure, with readings, music and personal tributes. Others take a more informal approach, centred around conversation and shared memories. The spaces can be arranged to reflect the tone that feels most appropriate.

How the day works

The day is planned with care and handled with discretion from arrival through to close. Timings can be arranged to suit your needs, whether that is a morning service followed by lunch, an afternoon gathering or an early evening event.

Many gatherings begin with a period of arrival, allowing guests to come together gradually before the service or tributes. This may take place in one of the reception rooms, with tea and coffee available. The space can then be arranged for readings, music or personal tributes, depending on the tone of the occasion.

Gathering together afterwards

Following the service, guests often move into a separate space for refreshments. This might be a seated lunch, a buffet or light refreshments, depending on what feels appropriate.

During the summer, outdoor spaces can also be used, offering the opportunity for quieter conversations or time away from the main gathering.

Throughout the day, our team remains present but unobtrusive, ensuring everything runs smoothly while respecting the nature of the occasion.

Spaces for memorial gatherings

The Hall provides a setting for larger services and celebrations of life and is typically available from 6.00 pm on weekdays and throughout the weekend.

For daytime gatherings during the week, the Parliament Chamber and Luncheon Room work particularly well together, allowing for services, tributes and refreshments across connected spaces.

For smaller evening gatherings, the Drawing Room offers a more intimate setting.

At weekends, Pegasus Bar & Restaurant provides a relaxed environment for smaller gatherings and connects to its south-facing terrace.

Outdoor and alternative settings

In spring and summer, receptions can also take place in the Garden, with the Terrace available as an additional outdoor space.

A fourth floor space with natural daylight is also available for exclusive hire, offering a more contemporary setting for informal gatherings.
